As I watched the movie, “Wicked”, I was in complete awe of the vocals that were present in the movie. The actors and actresses clearly had spectacular and talented voices. The sets and costumes were beautiful, phenomenal and so uniquely detailed. I loved the wit and character development as well. The characters each had their own part in the movie that showed their personality and feelings. As a choir kid and a past theatre kid, I admire the work that goes on in these types of movies. I appreciate the representation and differences of the people in the movie. It brings a source of modern-day time to “Wicked” but still keeping it fairytale-like.
The film includes the brilliant actresses, Ariana Grande Butera as Glinda, Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible alongside the esteemed Jonathon Bailey as Fiyero, Ethan Slater as Boq Woodsman, and Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz.
The movie begins with Glinda telling the story of how she and Elphaba crossed paths. She goes on to explain how they met long ago in a school named Shiz, where Elphaba and Glinda’s friendship blossomed. Glinda, who is beloved and popular throughout the school, wants to become sorceress, but is not taken seriously by Morrible.
On the other hand, Elphaba strikes Morrible’s interest due to her extraordinary powers. As Glinda and Elphaba are roommates, Glinda is resentful of Elphaba at first since Elphaba is esteemed by Morrible in her sorcery class, while Glinda is not. Glinda convinces Elphaba to talk to Morrible and persuade her to give Glinda a chance. Elphaba convinces Morrible to have Glinda or she will drop out of her sorcery class. She eventually gives in, from the fear of losing Elphaba, but informs Glinda that she does not have the potential to become sorceress, and she should just give up.
“I thought the movie was well done, the story was told beautifully, the sets were wonderfully made, Ariana Grande as Glinda was too perfect; I’m proud of both Cynthia and Ariana,[and] I would definitely recommend giving this movie a watch,” said senior Jaden Hoch.
While I loved the movie, I hated it being left on a cliffhanger. I wish there was some type of suspenseful scene at the end of the credits like they usually do in Marvel movies.
The theme from “Wicked” shows that your personality and traits are more important than your physical appearance. “Wicked” also presents the idea that you shouldn’t care about the opinions of others or the approval of others.
It was truly a phenomenal watch, and spectacular is an understatement for this movie. I ultimately cannot wait for the second part to come out in November 2025; I think it will really tie this whole journey together.
I would definitely recommend giving this movie a watch and its sequel next year.
