SHS senior Benjamin Hegge has won multiple awards in music. He claims it all started at Pioneer Middle School when he began middle school and Jenessa Stout convinced him to join band. He originally wanted to play the flute but there were no more school flutes left and Stout offered percussion, so he accepted the offer. He has since fallen in love with percussion. Hegge likes to add his own take on things, and says his favorite piece to perform is, “probably my snare drum solo this year that I placed in state for because there’s just so much opportunity within the piece to add my own take on it and just express my musicality and artistry”. He picks a piece by researching and clicking on every percussion solo he sees on his YouTube feed. This is an agreement he has made with himself to take every opportunity to find new pieces. He has found many hidden gems using this method. Hegge plans on turning his passion for music into a career and will most likely attend Pacific Lutheran University.
