DID is a disorder caused by severe childhood trauma. DID stands for Dissociative Identity Disorder, this is a mental health condition where the child’s brain doesn’t fully form one identity and can form two or more identities, occasionally varying in age, sexuality, gender, etc. This disorder can cause things such as derealization, delusions and depression, and can come with intense mood swings. It is difficult to get a diagnosis under the age of 18 even though it forms in childhood as young as 5-years-old.
About one percent of the population has or has been diagnosed with DID, most not getting diagnosed until their 30s or 40s. There is no specific cure for DID, many patients go to talk therapy, and some want to fuse the identities they experience. Others want to learn how to cope with this disorder. While this disorder is very rare among the population, people who have the disorder learn how to live and cope with the disorder, impacting even small things in the person’s life.
