Over the years, the story of Dr Seuss’s “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” has been remade three times the first time the story of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” was brought into life was with animation 1966. The second rendition of the story was live action from 2000, starring Jim Carrey. The most recent version is a 2018 animation starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the Grinch character. Each version of the story is told differently and each of the films is unique in its own way. However, I believe that the 2000 version of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is the best version of the beloved story. From a survey we conducted, it was found that 64.7% of the SHS students concur. In my opinion, Jim Carrey’s performance of the Grinch provided a sense of humor and relatability to the character, as well as a sense of depth to the character. The costume and special effects were incredible and added on to the character of the Grinch even more. The Grinch is not the only character that is enjoyable to watch. Cindy Lou Who, played by Taylor Momsen, adds sincereness and kindness to the movie as she challenges the town of Whoville’s materialism. She is not just a little girl who wakes up to find the Grinch stealing her tree. She reminds us what Christmas is truly about: not presents or decorations, but spreading love, joy and kindness. This depth to both Cindy Lou Who and the Grinch are not as prevalent in the other two versions. However, this should not discourage you from watching the 1966 or 2018 version of the Grinch. They just tell the story differently. At the end of the day, it is up to you which version you watch as all of them tell the same story but with certain things being changed. It is good no matter what and shares a valuable lesson to all on the true meaning of Christmas.
