The Washington State Legislature passed a bill called the ‘Lucas Petty Act’ earlier this month allowing health education courses to teach about the dangers of opioids and fentanyl. The Washington House bill HB 1956, named after Lucas Petty, was introduced on December 15, 2023. The House passed the bill unanimously on February 9 and the Senate passed the bill unanimously on February 29. This bill is expected to be signed into law later this spring and implies the instruction of the dangers of opioids and fentanyl to be taught in the 2025-26 school year.
